A Tailgate inspires you to go outdoors and cook, enjoy activities with family and friends. A tailgate party is organized for people with similar interests to hang out and have fun before and after the event they’re attending. A tailgate is a social get-together held in parking lots before and many times after an event. The event might be a concert, football game, baseball game, or other attraction. The name evolved to tailgating because people would open vehicle tailgates for impromptu seating and access to ice chests, food, chairs, and other tailgaters necessities. For events such as professional or college football games with an established history of tailgating, tailgaters might arrive hours before start of the event. Tailgaters might bring coolers full of food and drink, grills for barbecuing, and canopies that sport their favorite team colors. Some tailgaters even prefer to bring a recreational vehicle (RV) for access to comfy chairs, refrigerator, kitchen and a convenient bathroom.
In some cases, traditions develop into a tailgate party that rivals the event itself.
It's called “The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" in Jacksonville, Florida. The University of Florida and University of Georgia square off annually for their football game. Florida Times-Union sports columnist Bill Kastelz was the first to call the Georgia-Florida game, “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.” In the 1950s, soon after Kastelz, while covering the game, spotted a drunken tailgater offer a drink to a policeman.
In the music world, Jimmy Buffett fans congregate on parking lots before his concerts and host Parrothead tailgates. So too was the case with the longest touring band in history, The Grateful Dead. For years, dedicated fans or Deadheads followed the band around the U.S. and set up their tailgates.
On May 16, 2011, what many are calling the world’s largest tailgate, people lined the roads around Cape Canaveral to watch the final space shuttle launch as Space Shuttle Endeavour left the Earth for it’s final flight.
